The Maiden Beech Physical Education Department aims to provide every pupil the opportunity to exercise their body as well as mind and give pupils an understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of a diverse range of physical activities. The department aims to develop positive attitudes towards exercise and an understanding of its importance in maintaining a healthy life beyond school. Pupils will be encouraged to take on the additional responsibility of coaching and evaluating other pupils performances as well as performing. The department offer a wide range of extra curricular activities against other schools and offer a pathway to external clubs and coaches.

AutumnHealth Related Fitness
Pupil's will be looking at different aspects of fitness. Pupil's will be identifying areas of strength and weakness that they will need to develop.
AutumnGymnastics
Pupils will be working on key skills to build the fundamentals of a basic sequence.
SpringDance - movement to music
The pupils will be using the influence of Bollywood and Olympic sports as a stimulus to produce a basic dance.
AutumnTag Rugby
Introduction to passing and receiving techniques technique. Use of defensive lines to tag the opposition when the team is without the ball.
SpringOrienteering
Pupil's will be learning to orientate a map and follow a basic orienteering route.
SpringFootball
Emphasis on ball work, passing technique, basic control, fundamental movement skills and shooting.
SummerTennis
Pupil's will be working on stroke technique building up to rallies.
SummerAthletics
Use of pacing strategies during long distance running activities. Participation in pull and push throwing activities. Development of sprinting techniques.

Year 6

Pupil's will be working on stroke development and developing tactics in order to gain an advantage over an opponent. Pupil's will be developing their throwing, running and jumping skills. We will be using a quad kids approach to athletics where pupils can compare their performances against national standards.

Year 7

AutumnRugby
Use of invasion game to introduce passing technique backwards. Introduce ruck, maul and scrummage positions.
SpringGymnastics
Pupil's will be building upon skills learned within key stage 2. They will devise and develop pair counter balances, linking them with gymnastic movements. More apparatus will be used to change adapt performance.
SpringDance - movement to music
Pupils will use the stimulus of bollywood and sporting movements to devise and perform motifs.
SummerOrienteering
Pupils will build on skills learned within key stage 2 by reinforcing work undertaken on orientation of maps. Pupils will start to plan and follow other pupils maps building complexity over time.
SpringFootball
Working on the fundamental movement skills of pass and receive. we will refine passing, dribbling, shooting and defending skills.
SummerTennis
Pupils will continue to develop their range of strokes and understanding of tactics in order to give an advantage. Pupils will play half court full length games and will be grouped on ability.
SummerAthletics
Introduce run, jump and throw activities. The use of pacing strategies for longer distance running. Introduction to pull and push throws. Use of relay take overs for team work.

Year 8

SpringNetball and Basketball
Pupil's will be working on the fundamental skills of catching and passing. They will be participating in games of 'step into netball' and high 5. They will have an introduction to basketball looking at the key skills of dribbling and movement.
SummerAthletics, Cricket and Rounders
Pupils will be working on developing throwing,running and jumping skills. Pupil's will take part in sprinting, long distance and relay running. They will have the opportunity to develop throwing skills using vortex howlers, and jumping long and triple jumps.Pupils will also refine striking and fielding skills through cricket and rounders. Pupil's will be taught how to bowl over arm and bat within cricket and using fielding skills within rounders.
